El Dorado Hills is turning up the fun for readers of all ages this summer. Whether you’re a lifelong local or just visiting, you’ll find the 2025 summer reading programs are packed with activities, rewards, and a few unexpected twists. If you’re looking for a way to keep your kids busy, boost your own reading list, or snag some cool prizes, the El Dorado Hills Library and its partners have you covered.

Level Up at Your Library: Summer Reading Challenge 2025

This year’s theme is Level Up at Your Library. Think of it as a game where the only controller you need is a library card and your imagination. The challenge runs from June 1 to August 31, providing you with ample time to accumulate reading minutes, complete activities, and earn rewards. All ages are welcome—kids, teens, and adults can all join in on the fun.

How it works:

  • Sign up online at eldoradolibrary.beanstack.org/reader365 or visit the El Dorado Hills Library at 7455 Silva Valley Pkwy.

  • Track your reading and activities using Beanstack, a simple app or website that makes logging books and progress a breeze.

  • Earn badges and prizes as you read and complete challenges. The more you read, the more you win.

What’s at stake? Prizes range from book bags and free books to gift cards and entries into special drawings. There are also fun in-person events, storytimes, and even professional performances for families. The Friends of the El Dorado Hills Library help sponsor these extras, making sure there’s something for everyone to look forward to.

Library Hours:

  • Monday, Wednesday, Friday: 10 am – 5 pm

  • Tuesday, Thursday: 10 am – 7 pm

  • Saturday: 1 pm – 5 pm

Closed on Sundays, but don’t worry—the Beanstack app is always open.

Gallop Into Summer Reading: Free Virtual Horse Book Program for Kids

If your child’s idea of a perfect summer includes horses, adventure, and a stack of books, the Gallop into Summer Reading program is a must. This unique, free virtual program lets kids dive into stories about ponies, wild mustangs, and racing champions—all from the comfort of home.

Here’s what makes it special:

  • Curated by real horse book authors who know their way around a stable and a good story.

  • Open to all ages—from picture books for the youngest readers to middle-grade and young adult novels.

  • Downloadable resources, such as reading logs and activity pages, help keep kids engaged and motivated.

  • No cost to join and no need to buy any books. Just pick your favorites and start reading.

Summer reading isn’t just about passing the time. Studies show that kids who read over the summer are more confident, motivated, and ready to tackle the next school year. Plus, who wouldn’t want to spend a few afternoons galloping through a good book?

Beyond the Books: Events and Activities All Summer Long

The El Dorado Hills Library is more than just a quiet place to read. This summer, the calendar is packed with activities that make reading social, creative, and even a little competitive.

What’s happening at the library:

  • Professional performances for kids and families—think magicians, musicians, and storytellers.

  • Special preschool storytimes to give little ones a head start on reading.

  • Art classes and craft workshops for teens and adults who want to get creative.

  • Monthly LEGO Block Parties for builders of all ages.

  • Book clubs for children, teens, and adults—because reading is better with friends.

Check the library’s event calendar for dates and times, or just drop in and see what’s happening.

Why Join a Summer Reading Program?

  • Prevent the summer slide: Kids who read during summer keep their skills sharp and return to school ready to learn.

  • Build good habits: Make daily reading a routine, not a chore.

  • Win prizes: Let’s be honest, everyone loves a reward for a job well done.

  • Meet new people: From book clubs to storytimes, there’s a chance to make new friends who love reading as much as you do.
